I am super excited to report that tomorrow morning, bright and early, I am hopping on a plane to the great northwest for the Write on the Sound conference just outside Seattle. I’m actually flying into Spokane, and my dad is picking me up there as he drives west from northern Idaho. It’s a double whammy of writing time and dad time.
My Pops
In case you don’t know, my dad published his first book, a memoir, couple years ago: The Adventures of a Helicopter Pilot: Flying the H-34 helicopter in Vietnam for the United States Marine Corps. He worked on it for years and years, and the reception has been so great that he’s been inspired to write the sequel about his time as a helicopter pilot in Air America. Writing has become one of the main things we talk about, and so we figured it was time to go to a conference together.
Write on the Sound
We chose this conference because we love Seattle, my dad could drive it, he could pick me up on the way, and we can stay with friends. These may not be the most compelling reasons for choosing an event, but given that the financial stresses of being a writer are already pretty strong, this seemed like a great way to carve out time for our writing, and each other, without breaking the bank. I signed up for sessions with James Thayer, Anca Szilágyi, Eliot Treichel, and many others. In browsing the site, it looks like the organizers have put together a pretty great weekend.
What I’m Hoping to Find
Part of my love of conferences in anchored in a more general appreciation for seeing new things and meeting new people. While I value the stability of my home and my family, sometimes it can be really inspiring to step away for a weekend and indulge in my writing.
I’m really looking forward to talking about the craft of writing, listening to some great authors share what they’ve learned along the way, and doing it all with my dad.
Stay tuned. I’ll post pictures next week.
